Romantic Chinoiserie in Paris

I first saw this image of fashion designer Andrew Gn's Paris flat, on the Chinoiserie Chic site~although it's actually via Elle Décor magazine, I wanted to put my two cents worth in about this particular look, the idea of a "romantic" apartment in Paris, filled with fabulous French and chinoiserie inspired objects, porcelains, and Louis XV style... a perennial favorite of mine. 
Our friend and client, Jane, mentioned that she loves chinoiserie, and she's a fashion diva too, she had her own boutique in Mountain Brook, Alabama.  The last time I saw her, she was wearing a chartreuse yellow green Loro Piana with a Jimmy Choo minaudiere, and beige fishnet stockings with gold lame' sandals... with dripping gold bracelets.  She's so chic, and fun too!

What's Hot Now: Schumacher Chiang Mai Dragon

This charming and highly decorative design, by F. Schumacher, reminds me of when, years ago, I worked as an assistant to the Washington DC decorator, Bob Waldron~ Mr. Waldron sent me on an errand to the Japanese Embassy (It may have been the ambassador's residence) and I saw the most amazing gardens there.

Carolyne in Carolina

Beautiful and talented, Carolyne Roehm, has done it again! She has created a magnificent "Chinoiserie Room"~in her historic Charleston house, read all about it on her site!  Her taste is exquisite, and flawless...the touches of fuchsia are sublime in this Paris green room.The simple curtains show off the silk fabric, and lighten the mood, while the painted floor evokes Pauline de Rothschild at The Albany...a room for beauty's sake, and for nourishing the soul, and as the lady herself has said, the fulfillment of a long held dream.  Congrats Carolyne!  (it took two years to get the mirrors from England)  CR, the designers designer!DF *****  Here's a great interview with CR on NYSD click here ...

Andrew Martin Wall paper, MP Interiors

We recently installed this new blue and white porcelain inspired wall covering from Andrew Martin~ which also comes in a beige background- the one shown above is called Cargo blue-grey #CG02, 10 meter rolls, made in England.  This is what I used for my lacca povera entry door~ (see recent posts on the transformation of a banal door into something totally fabulous!) And, here I am again looking like a young Gary Cooper~ 22 years ago!

How amusing~ that I had completely forgotten about this old (1992) image of moi looking like a Chinese porcelain addict (which I was, and am) in that to die for RL silk shirting~and of course, I'm holding a paper Dixie cup of "sweet tea" since this was from when I was decorating a large-ish house in Greenville, SC for old clients there. Enjoy! DF *****

Christie's Sale October 2013

Last October, there was a beautiful auction at Christie's New York, of the estate of San Francisco socialite (and Michael Taylor client) Diana Dollar Knowles... our charming friend, the designer and blogger Mr. James Andrew created a wonderful post about it on his site called "What Is James Wearing?"

Suzanne Tucker, Mr. Taylor's protege' and former assistant, was mentioned in the "T" piece on this sale- and talked about how brilliant he was at pulling together disparate objects, mixing the finest antiques with a sense of scale and proportion not often seen.  Contrasting deliciously with his opulent nature-inspired "California Look".

Some of the realized auction prices were quite reasonable, including a group of three bouillotte lamps of varying sizes for only $2,200.  The total proceeds were in excess of three million dollars

Ravishingly Romantic Manhattan Guest Room

featuring Susanna Salk interviewing New York designer, Howard Slatkin.  (see my blog list below)
I found this room in the Fall 2013 "T" magazine, the style publication from the New York Times.  It seems to capture a decadent, almost 18th century atmosphere, and the palette of a muted turquoise with lilac appealed to me.  The piece also mentioned the (window) drapery as being from Stark - so I imagine it's Iris Barrel's Old World Weavers...which we represent in our showrooms at MP Interiors here - Mr. Slatkins' brother, Harry, does the best candles and home fragrance, after a distinguished career on Wall Street.  Cheers!
