R. HIGGINS, NASHVILLE

R. Higgins Interiors, via Traditional Home

Lately, I've been thinking about early inspirations, and this image reminded me of an old acquaintance, the designer Joan Gnasco, who was the sister of my old friend Gail Dewar.  Joan's small house inspired me, with its taupe walls and lemon yellow sofa, placed in the large window, facing a fireplace.  Her house always smelled deliciously of fresh lemon and fresh paint.  It was a house that was loved.

I was also inspired by a shop in town called John Simmons, aka The Shop of John Simmons...it was a home furnishings boutique, and had so many fun things, and it too always had a wonderful fragrance in the air.  I remember they always had copies of Architectural Digest you could buy there.  This was way back in the early 1970's...

Roger Higgins and Ann Shipp, who own the house shown above, love their deep taupe walls with their stunning chartreuse "tabloid" curtains, a style often favored by the late decorator, Mark Hampton.  The chartreuse color reminds me so much of the curtains Tice Alexander had chosen for his New York flat when I was living and working with him at the time.  Tice had been an assistant to the late Albert Hadley, who came to New York originally from Nashville!  I believe that John Simmons was also from Tennessee, and he was known for giving lavish parties.  All of these designers inspire me and bring back fond memories.  Enjoy!  DF *****

Heaven on the U.E.S.

via September Traditional Home
Kevin and Jay McLaughlin founded one of my favorite shops, now with 100 locations, called J.McLaughlin...the home of Kevin and his wife Barbara, is featured in the September issue of Traditional Home magazine, and what a warm and inviting townhouse it is.
Working with their long time friend, architect Doug Larson, the house was re-modeled to suit the needs of their family.  The library, above, was done in a subtle glazed olive...

I was excited to see the link to this story posted on the J. McLaughlin blog, and enjoy sharing it with you dear readers.  Lucky me, Naples has two McLaughlin shops, and a busy internet site as well.  They have also recently opened in Montecito, CA.  I just came back from some fun in the sun, on the east coast of Florida, and hope to share some shots with you from that trip soon!  So, stay tuned!  DF *****

Casa Real II, Todd Richesin

Todd Richesin and Robert Brown
You may recognize this image, since I had posted about fabulous Todd and Bobby previously~a designing duo from Knoxville, TN, I can't get enough of their exuberant and elegant Southern Style!

Todd Richesin in his Studio
While I don't yet personally know him, Todd and I have briefly chatted on Facebook, and our paths have (almost) crossed, at the Duck and Dolphin Antiques, in Key West, FL~where Todd has done work for clients...(see Traditional Home)...
I found this very interesting bit of bio on Todd on his site~
Todd grew up in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The arts and significance of home were important to his parents and still are. With their encouragement, Todd began painting and playing the violin at an early age. His first “project” happened by accident. On a trip with his parents to see their interior designer when Todd was seven years old, he found an Oriental rug in the designer’s showroom. After much insistence, he persuaded his parents and the designer to come see it, and it was deemed perfect for their library. The rug is still in his parents’ library today and has survived the re-decoration of that room three times.
Precocious? Yes, and I was the exact same way with my parents, and their interior designers!  But not at age 7 !

The foyer, shown above, reminds me of one in Charlotte, NC, that I'd seen when I was very young, and it made such a strong impression on me with it's magnificent sense of scale. It was the home of James Essary and Bill Ross.

Todd Richesin, Casa Real
The house of Todd and Bobby, known as Casa Real, has recently gone through some major renovations, including new windows, read all about it on their blog called "On The Fringe"...

There's a great love of European style elegance evident in Todd's work, and yet his repertoire is quite varied.  Here are some of the bedrooms at Casa Real, so inviting!

Everybody into the pool!  Doesn't this look so beautiful and inviting?  The garden and grounds at Casa Real are just as elegant as the interiors~ one can see all the love and hard work that's been poured into this project over the years. Kudos to Todd and Bobby on the creation of a masterpiece of Southern Elegance! Enjoy!  DF *****
